WGS 311 - Queer Film and Media (4 Cr.) (COM 430 ) (GCR RPP)(LER DIV) This course will explore gender and sexuality nonconformity in cinema, television, and video. Using readings drawn from queer theory and film criticism, we will examine significant queer auteurs and queer film practices, from activist videos to the New Queer Cinema movement to YouTube mashups. Topics to be considered include the politics of queer representation and visibility; appropriating and revising dominant mainstream images and genres; and queer aesthetics, sensibilities, and fandoms. Prerequisites: 2 300-level COM courses, COM 262 , and junior or senior status, by the beginning of the semester; or 2 WGS courses; or permission of the instructor.
