COM 262 - Research Methods in Media Studies (4 Cr.)


(WID) An investigation of the theory and methodological approaches to academic research in the fields of media and communication studies. This course covers ethnography, interviewing, survey methods, focus group work, textual analysis, content analysis, historical analysis, reception theory, and presentation of both qualitative and quantitative data. The course will focus on application of these methods to conduct research through numerous student projects. Intensive writing required. Must be taken to achieve writing proficiency in the major, with at least a B- received in the course. Students who fail to obtain writing proficiency in the major will be dropped from the major. This course satisfies requirements in Writing in the Discipline. Prerequisites: COM 105  and WEC course by the beginning of the course, or permission of instructor.
