SPE 100 - Special Education: Historical, Philosophical, and Legal Foundations (4 Cr.)

Changing roles of individuals with exceptional learning needs in society. Historical and philosophical development of interventions, educational provisions, institutions, programs, and services for children with exceptional learning needs. Characteristics of children with exceptional learning needs and their education needs. Various contemporary models of intervention and teaching. The legal rights of individuals with exceptional learning needs. Thirty hours of fieldwork (SPE100F) preferably taken concurrent with the course; one morning a week, 8:00 a.m. to noon. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from fieldwork schools. Prerequisite:ED 104 recommended. SPE 100F required concurrently or to be taken in a future semester.
