Public Health Minor

Public Health is a multidisciplinary field of study, which is constantly evolving to meet the needs of people around the world. The work of public health practitioners spans a wide of activities including, but not limited to:  increasing life expectancies, reducing infant and child mortality, eradicating or reducing many communicable diseases, improving safety in the workplace, insuring safer and healthier foods and influencing health policy and management. The work of Public Health professionals affects the lives of millions of people, compared to the one on one work of health care professionals in a clinical setting. The goals of the Public Health minor are to help students become familiar with the multidisciplinary nature of public health work, and increase their awareness of the opportunities available in the public health arena. This minor will also help students prepare for the core courses required by most Masters Programs in Public Health during the first year of graduate study.

The common core requirements for graduate level work in Public Health usually include work in the following areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, Behavioral and Community Health and Health Policy and Management. Thus, the minor in Public Health requires courses from a variety of disciplines to educate and prepare students for study or work in the above areas. The minor requires a total of 24 credits. The required courses from the following clusters and the Public Health Seminar will yield 22 credits. The remaining 2 credits can be met by an additional course in either the natural or social science cluster.

Capstone Seminar: (required)

Public Health Internship

Students will be strongly advised to complete a 2 credit internship in order to better educate themselves regarding specific areas in public health. Students participate on site under supervision of professionals in the field, and complete specific assignment(s) as determined by the faculty internship sponsor. Internships can be completed locally or internationally.  Each credit requires 45 internship hours. The nature of the internship will determine whether it can be taken for a grade or pass/no pass. Internship credits can be applied to the 24 credit total in either the Natural Science or Social Science area depending upon the nature of the work.
