In the fall of 2016, the Department of History and Historic Preservation will be introducing new requirements for its Historic Preservation minor, and a range of new courses to support those requirements. (See below for the old requirements, which will still apply to some students.). The minor will consist of five four-credit courses plus a capstone course, for a total of 22 credits. Students will have to take one 100-level history (HIS) course, three 200-level courses (including HP 210  and an approved internship), and the HP 311  seminar, and then the two-credit Capstone in History (HIS 497 , formerly HIS 480). Students who declare a historic preservation minor before the fall of 2016 can decide if they will follow these new requirements, or if they will follow the old requirements (see below).

OLD REQUIREMENTS: The historic preservation minor is designed for students interested in the stewardship and future of America’s historic buildings, structures, and landscapes. Basic historic preservation courses emphasize the theory and history of historic preservation and the various tools and techniques used to document cultural resources. Each course challenges students to think critically and to improve their writing and oral presentation skills. Additional courses are to be drawn from American studies, art history, history, and the social sciences. The historic preservation minor is composed of six courses, which also count towards the history major or minor.

Required courses include:

  • The remaining courses are to be chosen with the approval of the student’s adviser.
