Public Health Minor

Public Health is a multidisciplinary field of study, which is constantly evolving to meet the needs of people around the world. The work of public health practitioners spans a wide variety of activities including, but not limited to: increasing life expectancies, reducing infant and child mortality, eradicating or reducing many communicable diseases, improving safety in the workplace, insuring safer and healthier foods and influencing health policy and management. The work of Public Health professionals affects the lives of millions of people, compared to the one on one work of health care professionals in a clinical setting. The goads of the Public Health minor are to help students become familiar with the multidisciplinary nature of public health work, and increase their awareness of the opportunities available in the public health arena. This minor will also help students prepare for the core courses required by most Masters Programs in Public Health during the first year of graduate study. The common core requirements for graduate level work in Public Health usually incluse work in the following areas: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, Behavioral and Community Health and Health Policy and Management. Thus, the minor in Public Health requires courses from a variety of disciplines to educate and prepare students for study or work in the above areas. The minor requires a total of 24 credits, as designated from the following clusters of courses.

Capstone Seminar:

(1 credit) An interdisciplinary seminar designed to be a capstone experience where students study public health issues from a variety of perspectives. Ideally, the seminar will be co-taught by faculty members from the Natural Sciences and the Social Sciences.

Internship:

Students will be strongly advised to complete a 3 or 4 credit internship in order to better educate themselves regarding specific areas in public health. Internships can be completed locally or internationally. Possible internships are noted in Appendix II. The nature of the internship will determine whether it can be taken for a grade or pass/no pass. Internship credits will not contribute to the 24 credit total.
