CPEA 252 - Who Owns Music? (4 Cr.) We all feel a unique sense of ownership when it comes to our favorite music. But is it really “ours”? Who decides which artists endure and which are “one-hit wonders”? When artists put their work before the public, does it cease to belong to them? This course will consider these questions and take an unflinching look at the value proposition of musical creation, reception, and related social issues, including cultural appropriation. Through the survey of musical structures, styles, and history, this course will also confront issues concerning personal expression, propaganda, and aesthetics. Restricted to first-year and sophomore students, and others with permission of instructor. Students are limited to one CPE course per semester. Offered Spring 2019. Koehler.
