RUS 270 - Tales of St. Petersburg (4 Cr.)

In Russian and/or English. For mid-intermediate students. Course revolves around the theme of Russia’s western capital. Includes an in-depth analysis of the Bronze Horseman by Pushkin and Requiem by Akhmatova, as well as Gogol’s short stories. Part of a four-year cycle of rotating pre-revolutionary topics in fiction, poetry, or drama involving close textual analysis of select works of one author, in-depth analysis of a single literary masterpiece, or examination of a particular theme or genre. Special emphasis is placed on the writing of critical essays. May be taken more than once under a different topic for minor and major credit. English speakers read the works in translation. Prerequisite: any 200 level Russian literature course, RUS 312 , or instructor’s permission. Fall semester. Samilenko.
