RUS 261 - 18th-19th Century Satire (4 Cr.) (cross-listed as RUS 361, WL 261, and WL 361)
In Russian and/or English. For mid-intermediate students. Ccourse structured around the study of the works of Fonvizin, Gogol, Saltykov-Schedrin and Nekrassov. Part of a four-year cycle of rotating pre-revolutionary topics in fiction, poetry, or drama involving close textual analysis of select works of one author, in-depth analysis of a single literary masterpiece, or examination of a particular theme or genre. Special emphasis is placed on the writing of critical essays. May be taken more than once under a different topic for minor and major credit. English speakers read the works in translation. Prerequisite: RUS 231 , or instructor’s permission. Fall semester. Samilenko.
