ARH 275 - Renaissance Art in Europe (4 Cr.)(formerly ART 275) This course surveys painting, sculpture, and architecture in Europe from the 14th-17th centuries. We will consider northern and southern Renaissance artists from Giotto and Jan Van Eyck to Michelangelo and Durer in their cultural and social contexts. Topics for discussion include the rise of the Artist, the emergence of early modern art theory, the assimilation of antiquity, and the development of portraiture, landscape, and mythological subjects in the visual arts. Prerequisite: ARH 103 (formerly ART 103) or permission of the instructor. Fall. Variable semesters. Oettinger.
