HIS 260 - Slavery, the Civil War, & Reconstruction (4 Cr.) (GCR RPP) The mid-nineteenth-century sectional conflict over slavery, including the tumultuous bloodbath known as the Civil War, was a defining moment in American history. This course investigates the causes, nature, meaning, and consequences of that conflict. Specific topics to be addressed might include: the relationship between slavery and capitalism; the relationship between the enslaved and those who held them in bondage; racial ideology; the politics of slavery and the politics of North versus South; secession and the outbreak of war; the evolution and nature of the military conflict; the Northern and Southern homefronts, including gender relations; the sequence of events leading to emancipation; African American efforts to enact and secure freedom; the politics of Reconstruction; and the persistence of racial and sectional conflict after the Civil War. Recommended but not required: 12 college credits or permission of the instructor. Variable semesters. Offered 2010-11 and alternate years. Hale.
