HIS 342 - Stalinism in the USSR (4 Cr.) This course is a research and writing seminar focused on Stalin and Stalinism in Soviet history. Topics include Stalin’s rise to power, the collectivization of agriculture and peasant resistance, industrialization and the five-year plans, family law reforms, gender and sexuality in Stalinist society, informant culture and the Terror, the military and World War II, anti-Semitism, and Stalin’s cult of personality. We will also consider the ideological issues of how both Russian and Western historians have written about this period, including totalitarian and revisionist models. (All assignments and readings will be in English). Prerequisite: HIS 222 and sophomore standing. Variable semesters. Corcoran.
