DAN 333 - West African Dance Technique III (2 Cr.)

A study of high intermediate and complex movements and rhythms that are rooted in the Africanist experience. This course will evoke elements of improved technique and performance skills via complex movement phrases and their musicality. It focuses on decolonizing movement (technique) through neo-traditional African and Diasporic movement. Students will study the application of polyrhythm, polycentrism, groundedness, and spinal work and explore the head-tail connection. The embodied of the above modalities will culminate in techniques to create new works such as contemporary African dance, Hip Hop, Afrobeats/Afropop, improvisation, etc. Repeatable up to three times for credit. Prerequisite: placement in DAN 333 or above Fall and spring semester. Program faculty.
