PHL 437 - Queer Theory (4 Cr.)

(Formerly PHL 237) (LER Understanding Diverse Perspectives)(GCR Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies area)
Queer theory is one of the richest and fastest growing fields of contemporary philosophical inquiry. This course will trace various arguments for overcoming the categories “heterosexual” and “homosexual,” as defined in hetero-patriarchy, in favor of a more contemporary understanding of sexuality (and gender itself) as mobile, contradictory, and irreducibly mediated by social forces. In addition to the classic literature in this area, readings will explore kink, camp, affect, the relationship between queer and feminist resistances, and the queering of the philosophical tradition. Prerequisite: Either two philosophy courses (one at the 300-level) or permission of the instructor.
