FR 358 - French Cultures. Interpreting social change in transnational France. (4 Cr.)(formerly FR 258) (GCR Social and Behavioral Sciences area) This course examines change and diversity in contemporary French society. With attention to recent history, the course addresses pivotal issues in areas such as politics, family, religion, education, immigration, urban planning, and the European Union. Themes include the French context for concepts such as race, gender, and political belonging, and the transformation of national specificities in a world increasingly shaped by transnational imperatives. Drawing on recent scholarship, journalism, and feature and documentary films, this course considers how current events reflect broader patterns of social change and possibility in contemporary France. Prerequisite: FR 250 or permission of the instructor. Spring semester. Alternative years. Ingram.
