SOC 202 - Identity (3 Cr.) Examination of theories of the self and identity beginning with the early symbolic interactionist tradition and moving into contemporary perspectives. Topics include: names and naming, the importance of others and social interaction, as well as identity entrances, exits, transformations, and commutes. The course will place a strong emphasis on narrative analysis and the subjective and intersubjective experience of a variety of identities, both “exotic” and mundane. Prerequisites: or or permission of instructor. Spring semester. Offered 2015-16 and alternate years. Mullaney.
