ENG 249 - The Legacy of Slavery (3 Cr.) (LER - DIV) In this interdisciplinary course on African-American literature, culture, and history students will examine the impact and legacy of slavery on the experiences of all Americans, but particularly African Americans as they negotiate and define “freedom” for themselves throughout history. The theme of enslavement will be explored from the American Colonial period to the present in literary genres that include slave narratives, poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and science fiction. Authors include Butler, Chesnutt, Douglass, Hansberry, Ellison, and Wright. Prerequisite: college writing proficiency, or WRT 181 , or permission of the instructor, or sophomore standing.
