PHL 237 - Queer Theory (3 Cr.)

Queer theory is one of the richest and most quickly growing fields of contemporary philosophical inquiry. This course will trace various arguments for overcoming the categories “heterosexual” and “homosexual” as defined in hetro-patriarchy, in favor of a more contemporary understanding of sexuality (and gender itself ) as fluid and irreducibly mediated by social forces. Readings will explore heterosexual normativity, sadomasochism, camp, queer identity, transgender, the relationship between queer and feminist resistances, and the queering of the philosophical tradition. Prerequisite: 100-level course in philosophy. Fall semester. Offered 2009-10 and alternate years. Grebowicz.
