HIS 342 - Stalinism in the Ussr (4 Cr.) This course is a research and writing seminar focused on Stalin and Stalinism in Soviet history. Topics include Stalin’s rise to power, the collectivization of agriculture and peasant resistance, industrialization and the five-year plans, family law reforms, gender and sexuality in Stalinist society, informant culture and the Terror, the military and World War II, anti-Semitism, and Stalin’s cult of personality. Weekly readings will explore these topics in more depth, and students can choose research topics according to their areas of interest. Prerequisite: HIS 222 strongly recommended; if not, at least one of HIS 117 , HIS 224 , or HIS 254 is required and sophomore standing. Course is not repeatable. Variable semesters. Fraser.
