HIS 289 - Special Topics: The European Witch Hunt to 1750 (3 Cr.)
This course offers a general survey of the intellectual and social history of witchcraft doctrines and their consequences in Western civilization from antiquity until the 18th century. The central focus is the rise and decline of organized persecution of witches in Christendom between the 15th and 17th centuries. The course will also consider the legal and a judicial context in which accusations of witchcraft were prosecuted. Course may be repeated if topic is different. Fall semester. Offered 2010-11 and alternate years. Beachy.
