VMC 330 - American Sacred Space (4 Cr.) (AMS 330/ARH 330/RLG 330) This course examines the role of the built environment and natural spaces in American religious experience and practice. Through attention to methodological, theoretical and primary sources, we will examine how Americans have defined and designated spaces as sacred and thereby separate from the profane world. The class will take a field trip to a variety of “sacred spaces” in the Baltimore and/or Washington, D.C. area. Prerequisite: At least one course in Religion or Art History or permission of instructor. Fall semester. Offered 2018 and every other year. Duncan.
