CPEC 250 - Where, When, and How do We Belong?: Citizenship through Space and Time (4 Cr.)

(GCR RPP)(GCR Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies area)
What is the meaning of citizenship in an interconnected world? How, and where, do we situate ourselves in such an environment? These questions challenge us, to see both ourselves and others in dynamic relationships with each other, negotiating space and developing community in the porcess. These are not new questions, nor are they discipline specific, but they are central to the human condition. In this course, students will explore answers to these questions by focusing on concepts and practices of citizenship in two countries, China and the United States, both historically and in the present. It will focus in particular on the experiences of immigrants from China to the United States, as a case study for understanding how ideas of race, and the intersection of race and power, have affected the problems of citizenship. Students are limited to one CPE course per semester. Dawley.
