COM 430 - Queer Film and Media (4 Cr.)

This course will explore gender and sexuality nonconformity in narrative, experimental, and documentary cinema, using readings drawn from queer theory and queer film criticism to trace evolving ways of thinking about and screening queerness from the pre-LGBT liberation period, through the Stonewall and AIDS eras, to the present. Topics to be considered include the politics of queer authorship, representation, and visibility; appropriating and revising heteronormative and cisnormative images and dominant cinematic conventions; and queer aesthetics, sensibilities, and fandoms. Prerequisites: Completion of the WEC and WID requirements; and completion of two 200-level WGS courses, or two 300-level COM courses, or one 200-level WGS course and one 300-level COM course; and junior or senior status; OR permission of the instructor. Spring semester, alternate years.
