(GEN. ED. #4)
An advanced survey of 17th- and 18th-century philosophy as developed in the writings of Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. All readings are from primary sources, supplemented by lecture and discussion. We will consider not only the internal arguments of these texts, but also the broader cultural and political questions that frame their arguments. Prerequisite: either sophomore standing, a 100-level philosophy course, or permission of the instructor. Spring semester. Offered 2010-11 and alternate years. DeCaroli.
