Astronomy Minor

A minor is designed for non-physics majors who have an interest in the field and wish to explore it at more than a superficial level. The minor can easily be completed within 3 years; interested students are encouraged to take the introductory physics sequence (PHY 126-126) before the end of their sophomore year. PHY 115-116 can be substituted, but only with departmental permission.

Courses required for the astronomy minor include:

AST 110 - Introduction to Astronomy (4 Cr.)
AST 210 - Intermediate Astronomy (3 Cr.)
AST 320 - Astrophysics (3 Cr.)
PHY 125 - General Physics I (4 Cr.)
PHY 126 - General Physics II (4 Cr.)
PHY 220 - Modern Physics (4 Cr.)
PHY 230 - Intermediate Physics Laboratory (2 Cr.)

Two additional courses from the following list:

AST 330 - Relativity and Cosmology (3 Cr.)
AST 395 - Independent Work in Astronomy (1.5-4 Cr.)
MA 221 - Linear Algebra (4 Cr.)
MA 222 - Calculus III (4 Cr.)

PHY 250 - Energy, Physics, and the Environment (3 Cr.)
PHY 280 - Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences (4 Cr.)

Note:

The astronomy minor is not available to physics majors. PHY 115 and PHY 116 may be substituted for PHY 125 and PHY 126 with permission of the department.
