Visual and Material Culture Major

Core Requirements:

All majors concentrating in VMC must complete the following required courses (36 credits).  (300-level courses cannot be substituted for the additional required 200-level courses.) Courses must be passed with a grade oc C- or better to count towards the major.

• VMC 103 - Introduction to Global Visual Culture (4 Cr.)
• VMC 215 - Museums, Exhibitions, and the History of Collecting (4 Cr.)
• VMC 200-level course (4 credits)
• VMC or LIT 200-level course (4 credits)
• One 4-credit elective in HIS, PHL, RLG, WRT, COM, SOA, ART, or Interdisciplinary Studies
• 300-level courses in VMC that total 8 credits (may be a combination of 2- and 4-credit courses)
• 300-level course(s) in VMC or LIT that total 4 credits (two 2-credit courses or one 4-credit course)
• 400-level course in VMC or LIT (2 credits)
• VLMC Capstone (2 credits) - beginning in AY23-24

 

Writing Proficiency in the Major

One paper, website, or virtual/physical exhibition demonstrating research and critical analysis with a grade of B or better, written for a course in the major.

Honors in the Major

All Visual and Material Culture majors are encouraged to pursue Honors in the major.

To achieve honors, graduating seniors must have:

• a minimum GPA of 3.5 in all courses taken within the major;
• a minimum overall GPA of 3.3;
• a minimum grade of B+ in VMC/LIT 497; and
• a thesis or exhibition (physical and digital) project with a minimum grade of B+
