Historic Preservation Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors, Minors, Concentrations, and Certifications

The historic preservation minor is designed for students interested in the stewardship and future of America’s historic buildings, structures, and landscapes. Basic historic preservation courses emphasize the theory and history of historic preservation and the various tools and techniques used to document cultural resources. Each course challenges students to think critically and to improve their writing and oral presentation skills. Because the minor is part of the Visual and Material Culture program, students are encouraged to also take courses in this program. The historic preservation minor is composed of five courses, which may also be applied towards the Visual and Material Culture major and minor.

Required courses include:

  • VMC 110 / HP 110 - Preserving Our Heritage (4 Cr.)
  • VMC 230 / HP 230 - Understanding Historic Buildings (4 Cr.)
  • VMC 290 / HP 290 - Internship in Historic Preservation (0-4 Cr.)  (must be taken for 4 Cr.)
  • VMC 315 / HP 315 - Preservation Workshop (4 Cr.)
  • One 4-credit course in the VMC program. This course will be chosen with the approval of the student’s adviser.
