Latin American Studies Minor

The Latin American Studies minor (LAM) is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the diverse regions of the Caribbean, Mexico and Central and South America through the history, politics, languages and cultures of their peoples. Based on their own major interests, students examine this geopolitical region’s geography, racial and ethnic makeup, politics, national economies, languages and socio-historical memory as well as its relationship to the United States. There is a mandatory language requirement to complete up to SP 235. Students with Portuguese or French background, please contact the LAM director. In addition to the language requirement, the minor in Latin American Studies requires a minimum of 20 credits of course work. Only one course taken through an approved study-abroad program may be applied toward the minor. Permission from the Latin American Studies director is required. Goucher sponsored ICAs that count for the minor are: SP/ED 272Y: Intercultural Communication in Nicaragua; LAM/BUS 272Y: Business Markets in Cuba; SP/ES 130G, SP 130G/229G/299G: Environmental Studies in Ecuador.
