Professional and Creative Writing Major

The Major in Professional and Creative Writing prepares students for a life of writing.  Students may choose between two tracks:  Professional Writing and Rhetoric or Creative Writing.  In both tracks, students pursue a creative, process-driven, and imaginative approach to their writing. The major itself is versatile, giving students the options to excel in the current and future workplace.

PROFESSIONAL WRITING AND RHETORIC TRACK (24 Cr.)


2 additional credits at the 300/400 level


2 additional credits at 300/400 level in courses to be determined, including independent study, internship, and Honors thesis.

In addition to the Capstone Composing Experience course (see above under Core Courses), students are required to take a minimum of two credits at the 400 level:


CREATIVE WRITING TRACK: (24 Cr.)


PLUS


4 credits of additional Creative Writing courses at the 100, 200, 300, or 400 level, WRT 499 - Independent Work (1-4 Cr.)  is highly recommended. Creative Writing majors are required to take four workshops and may count a fifth toward the major.

8 credits of coursework in English, French, or Spanish Literature at the 200, 300, or 400 level. With approval from the center director, some CPEC courses may be included.

Note: Many new courses which are likely to emerge from revitalization of Literature and other programs may also qualify for inclusion. The list above is exemplary, not exhaustive.

Additionally, Majors on the Creative Writing track will be encouraged to consider combining the major with the 20 credit Literary Studies Minor.

Honors in the Major


Students can earn Honors in the Major by earning a minimum GPA of 3.70 in courses in the program.
