HIS 295 - Latin American History: National Period (4 Cr.) (LAM 295) (LER - DIV)(LER - TXT) This course examines the history of Latin America from the rise of independence movements in the early nineteenth century until the present. It focuses in particular on the formation of nation states and the social, political, and ideological issues that manifest in the development of these nations. The course will move chronologically exploring the creation of independent nations during the nineteenth century out of the crisis of Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires in the Americas, considering the consolidation of liberal political economies and challenges to these economies. These histories will provide a framework for a final section exploring the twentieth century that will focus on dictatorships and the neoliberal order in the region, as well as social and political movement that challenged them. Within the context of this chronological framework we will draw from a wide range of case studies that will include the history of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Andean Republics and Central America. These case studies will allow us to examine closely the changes and continuities in Latin American societies during the national period. We will use these examples to explore recent historical approaches to this history that have highlighted the importance of exploring gender and race in these histories. Throughout the course the students will also analyze primary and secondary sources related to the course themes that highlight the experiences among others of immigrants, indigenous communities, and communities of African descent. By the end of the semester students will have read widely on the history of Latin American nations, examined the experiences of various groups within the region, and written about and interpreted these histories. Students new to the field of History are welcomed in the class; no prior knowledge of Latin American history is required or expected. Prerequisite: one semester of college experience or permission of the instructor. First offered Spring 2016, offered every year or every other year. Amador.
