THE 218 - Theatre for Social Change (4 Cr.)


This course will look at specific techniques designed to use theatre as a way of raising awareness about issues, explore practical solutions to those problems, and, in some cases, promote changes in legislation. Students will learn about best practices in the work of Augusto Boal (Forum Theatre), Anna Deveer Smith (theatre as journalism), Bertolt Brecht (political theatre), and others. Students will develop performance projects around social problems or political issues, and will perform to audiences in the community in non-traditional locations. Two class meetings per week, and community based learning component. Prerequisite:  ,  ,  , or permission of instructor. Spring semester. Curry.
