HIS 203 - Boxer Uprising in China and the World (3 Cr.) This course will study a single event that was crucial both for late-imperial Chinese history and
for China’s relations with foreign powers at the turn of the 20th century. It will do so through a
variety of historical approaches and materials, including historical narrative, historical memory,
personal memoir, oral history, and visual history. It will explore this popular movement against
foreign presence in China in terms of long-range and short-term trends in Chinese history, as
well as the different perspectives that Chinese, Japanese, and Westerners had on the Boxer
uprising. Prerequisite: one 100-level history course or sophomore standing.
