PSC 262 - Government and Politics in Southeast Asia (3-4 Cr.)

This course examines political, economic and social development in Southeast Asia. The course first focuses on the different types of governing systems, including democracy in Indonesia and the Philippines, semi-democracy in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, and the military junta in Burma. Then, it turns to issues in political economy, including development under communism in Vietnam and Cambodia,  illicit economies and human trafficking in Burma and Thailand,  and the economic impact of the AIDS crisis. The course concludes with an introduction to the role of religion in politics, centering on Christianity, Buddhism and Islam in the Philippines, Burma and Indonesia and Malaysia, respectively.
