ART 216 - Collage: Image and Composition (4 Cr.)

This studio course explores collage as a medium for creating visual compositions. Collage is an artwork made from an assemblage of different forms and images, resulting in a new whole. Subject matter may include personal, political, cultural, or social themes, as well as purely aesthetic visual statements. Students experiment with a variety of methods to develop individual artistic voices and to discover how the collage process can best express ideas, passions, and concerns. The course also includes the study and discussion of works by collage artists, graffiti artists, songwriters, and other contributors to visual culture.
A wide range of materials may be used to construct collages, including photogenerated images, traditional art media, found scraps, and personal artifacts. Sources can be both representational and abstract. By the end of the course, students will be able to effectively use collage as a medium to stimulate, provoke, and reframe ways of seeing the world.
