CPED 214 - Natural Disasters (4 Cr.) (GCR Biological and Physical Science area) This course features a comprehensive exploration of the dynamic and impactful forces of nature that shape our world. This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to comprehend, manage, and respond to various natural disasters. Topics include volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, mass wasting, flooding, subsidence, coastal hazards, severe weather, hurricanes, and wildfires. This course delves into the science behind these events, examining the geological, meteorological, hydrological, and environmental factors that contribute to their occurrence. Emphasis will be placed on disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. Students will engage in case studies, simulations, and real-world scenarios, applying their knowledge of earth processes and honing practical skills in disaster risk reduction, emergency management, and environmental management. Through the lens of problem-based learning, students will develop strategies to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on communities and the environment.
