HIS 287 - The Rise, Fall, and Rise of Modern China (4 Cr.) Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies This course examines China’s history from the 17th century to the present, a period in which it became the most influential country in the world for 150 years, and then slowly declined and fragmented as a result of internal and external factors. After 20th century of dramatic revolutions and upheavals, it has almost regained its former status. We will examine China’s political and social structures, economic fluctuations, and its changing position in global affairs. Prerequisite: Recommended but not required: 12 college credits or permission of the instructor. Variable semesters.
