PCE 215 - Truth and Repair: Alternative Forms of Justice (4)

What is to be done when a nation’s dominant group violates other groups’ rights, but also controls the legal and economic systems that might hold it accountable? This course examines scenarios like this, using local and international case studies of interventions for justice from state-level Truth Commissions to community-based solutions.  At the heart of repair-work is opening up new narrative channels in stories that feel numbingly familiar, solutions that repeat the entrenched patterns of the past; and understanding that no person, tactic, or solution is neutral.  As a 200-level course we’ll focus on transferable skills and competencies.  Students will have an opportunity to learn from practitioners of many different models of justice, meeting virtually with peaceworkers overseas and locally with members of the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Towson Freedom Trail project, and here on campus with Goucher’s Hallowed Ground project. Spring semester, every other year. Hopper.
