CPED 212 - Reproductive Strategies (4) Perhaps the most important force in biological systems is the drive to reproduce. Our perspective often views reproduction and sex synonymously, however, in the natural world sex is not the only means to reproduce and not all sex resembles human sex. In this course, students will gain insight into reproductive biology and evolution by exploring different modes of reproduction in non-human organisms including bacteria, plants, and animals. The diversity of reproductive strategies will be examined through reading and evaluation of scientific literature, popular literature, and other media. Students will collaborate to investigate how organisms overcome biological, physiological, and environmental limitations to successfully reproduce. Students will be challenged to apply the course content coupled with their own perspectives and knowledge to a unique set of circumstances to develop creative solutions for novel reproductive strategies. Additionally, throughout the course students will confront how human assumptions and biases have shaped scientific knowledge and understanding van Breukelen.
