ART 493 - Art & Research Practicum (4 Cr.)

A studio art course designed for artists, creators, and art minors.  The course provides students time to develop an art portfolio while considering the relationships between artmaking and its cultural context in contemporary art practices.  Class discussions and assigned readings develop students’ critical and conceptual skills.  Artist/curator lectures and museum/gallery visits (Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington DC) compliment the course curriculum and help students build context for their art practices.  Students will pursue a cohesive body of artwork based on personal voice and independent, artistic research interests.  Group critiques throughout the course provide feedback and discourse on new work.  Near the end of the semester students will document their progress in a group exhibition.  This is a required course for the Studio Art Minor. Prerequisite: three studio courses, one of which must be a 200-level class or permission of instructor. Prerequisite: three or more studio courses, or permission of instructor. Spring semester. Department.
