CHI 201 - Modern Chinese Culture through Film & Literature (4 Cr.)

This course provides an overview of Chinese culture through Chinese cinema and literature from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Over the course of the term, we will explore how Chinese films and literature present China’s images and history, raising questions on modern and traditional values, family and social challenges, and national and cultural identity. Although the film and literature in this course are arranged in chronological order, we will also examine them through four themes: Chinese Nation-Building, Trauma and Historical Memory, Consuming Nostalgia, and Presenting Chinese Culture in a Global context.
