HIS 284 - Race, Empire and Citizenship in the Global 20th Century. (4 cr.) (GCR RPP)(GCR Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies) This course explores race, empire, and citizenship around the globe during the 20th century as a means to contextualize contemporary crises over migration, national borders, and neo-fascism. European empires and colonial rule left an indelible mark on cultures and societies across the globe. By tracing their impact on racial hierarchies and constructions of citizenship, we can better understand contemporary relations between the global south and the West. Each case study is designed to build upon the previous week so that by the end of the semester you will be able to analyze the trajectory of racial ideology, nationalism, and revolutionary thought during the 20th century. Recommended but not required: 12 college credits or permission of the instructor. Variable semesters. Contreras.
