ES 405 - Food Justice (4 cr.)

In this course, students will investigate food apartheid, to examine how food access intersects with social, political and economic systems such as racism, social class, white supremacy, and patriarchy. Food apartheid illustrates that equitable food access and distribution must also grapple with systemic inequities that underpin society. The course centers justice by situating colonial histories in the present, revealing ongoing material and symbolic violence. Students will collaborate with local and regional organizations to support Black land and food sovereignty in Baltimore City. Course design supports collaborative, community based research focused on imagined possibilities of more just food access and distribution.  Prerequisite: ES 230 or ES/WGS 242 or PHL 205.
