HIS 218 - Comparative Genocide: Global Mass Violence in Historical Perspective (4 cr.)

Comparative genocide examines genocide and mass killing across time and space. While we delve into the definition of genocide. and theoretical works exploring the concept, most of the course is devoted to understanding the historical concept of mass killing and ethnic killing. Case studies include the genocide of the Herero and Nama, the Armenian genocide, the Indonesian mass killings in 1965-66, the Guatemalan genocide, and the Rwandan genocide. At the end of the course, we will discuss the UN Genocide Convention, international law, and efforts at prosecuting those responsible for crimes against humanity. We will end the discussion of restorative justice and the question of its efficacy in the aftermath of genocide. Recommended but not required: 12 college credits or permission of the instructor.
