Education Studies Major

38 or more credits. Credits taken for another major or concentration cannot double count in the Education Studies Major

Education Studies Thematic Core

Students can select one of 3 options for a Thematic Core: Teaching and Learning (pathway to 4+1 Master of Arts in Teaching program), minor in a complimentary discipline, or Student Designed Thematic Core. Students MUST select one of these thematic cores.

Teaching and Learning (pathway to 4+1 MAT program)

  • 6 credits of graduate level education courses selected in consultation with graduate advisor. (Note: currently students are allowed to take up to 15 graduate credits that also count toward their undergraduate degree.)
  • History course (4)
  • MAT prerequisite courses are strongly recommended (these courses are required for Maryland State Teacher Certification in Elementary Education through the graduate program. Strongly recommend students complete these as undergraduates):
    • Literature
    • English Composition (can be WRT 181 )
    • Art and/or music (totaling 3 or more credits)
    • History (two courses)(note: 1 history course can double-count for History course requirement for major)
    • Social Science (one course taken from one of the following programs: Sociology and Anthropology; Political Science and International Relations; Economics; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies)
    • Natural science (three courses other than psychology or cognitive science; one course must be a four-credit laboratory course)
    • Math (three courses if placed at the L level: MA 110 , MA 113 , and a DA-foundational course; students placing at the M level must complete a DA-foundational course; students placing at the H or H+ level must fulfill the college DA requirement)

Minor

Students can select a minor in a field of disciplinary interest to complement education studies. Note: if the minor does not require 8 credits at the 300- and/or 400-level, students will have to complete one additional 4-credit 300- or 400-level course.

Student Designed Thematic Core

Students can collaborate with their EDS academic advisor to design a thematic core around which to build their course of study. The core must include at least 4 courses related to the selected theme, preferably in the same department. At least 8 credits must be at the 300-level or higher.
