Visual and Material Culture Major

Core Requirements:

All majors concentrating in VMC must complete the following required courses (36 credits).  (300-level courses cannot be substituted for the additional required 200-level courses.) Courses must be passed with a grade oc C- or better to count towards the major.

• VMC 103 - Introduction to Global Visual Culture (4 Cr.)
• VMC 110 - Preserving our Heritage (4 Cr.)

• One 200-level VMC course (4 Cr.)

• One 200-level course in VMC or LIT (4 Cr.)

• One elective course (4 Cr.). Students choose from the following, in consultation with your VMC advisor:

       MDS 341  

       MDS 342  

       FR 250  

       FR 251  

       PHL 253  /VMC 253  

       SOA 100- or 200-level course (4 Cr.)

       ART 100- or 200-level course (4 Cr.)

• Two 300-level VMC courses (8 Cr.)

• One 300-level VMC or LIT course (4 Cr.)

• One 400-level VMC course (2 Cr.)

• VMC 497 - Senior Capstone in VMC & LIT (2) /LIT 497  

Writing Proficiency in the Major

One paper or exhibition at the 300-level demonstrating research and critical analysis with a grade of “B” or better, written for a course in the major.

Honors in the Major

All Visual and Material Culture majors are encouraged to pursue Honors in the major.

To achieve honors graduating seniors must have all of the following:

* a minimum GPA of 3.50 in all courses taken within the major

* a minimum overall GPA of 3.30

* a minimum grade of B+ in VMC/LIT 497, and

*a thesis or exhibition (physical or digital) project conducted as an independent study in consultation with VMC faculty, with a minimum grade of B+.
