Theatre Department

The Theatre Department offers a major and a minor in theatre.

Theatre is an art form that explores many dimensions of the human experience. In a liberal arts context, studying theatre allows students to explore people, cultures, literature, design, the communication process, and much more, in ways that engage the body, heart, mind, and voice. Theatre students at Goucher actively learn the multiple skills involved in theatre making, and, in addition, explore the historical, cultural, and social ideas that inform what theatre is about.

The department of theatre offers courses in performance, theatre history, criticism, dramatic literature, design, playwriting, and technical theatre production. The curriculum combines rich, practical stagecraft with a strong intellectual foundation. Theatre students gain important leadership skills while practicing creative and collaborative problem solving. Courses of study can be arranged for those students who wish to combine theatre studies with other disciplines such as art, dance, communications and media studies, English, music and arts administration.

The department also produces a regular season of theatre performances that complement the department’s curriculum. Production work is not restricted to theatre majors or minors but is open to all interested members of the college community. Opportunities are available to perform, direct, write, design, and do technical production work. Many technical jobs are paid positions for students. We encourage internships and special study abroad opportunities for our students, and students have opportunities to work with professional theatre artists connected to the production season and during special professional development workshops hosted by the department.  In addition, students have the opportunity to see great theatre in Baltimore, and in nearby cities including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York.
