FR 358 - Current Events in Fifth-Republic France (4 Cr.)

This course examines recent changes in contemporary French society. With attention to Fifth Republic history, the course addresses pivotal issues in areas such as the French political system, marriage and family, religion, education, immigration, urban planning, and the European Union. Themes include the role of the central state and the republican model of political belonging, and the French context for concepts such as race, gender, and national identity. Drawing on recent scholarship, print and media journalism, and feature and documentary films, this course considers how current events reflect broader patterns of social change. Prerequisite: FR 245  or permission of the instructor.  Spring semester. Alternate years. Ingram.
