GER 240 - German Literature, Life, and Culture (4 Cr.)

(LER-TXT)
How do we define a literary text? Are Comics literature? How does children’s and youth literature fit into the literary canon? How does fiction offer a window onto social and historical themes and developments in German-speaking countries? How do they tell stories? These are the questions that will drive this course on German literature. Depending on the rotating topic, the course will introduce students to different literary genres (e.g. short stories, novels, children’s books, graphic novels), and explore a specific time period in the history of German-speaking countries. Special attention is given to reading strategies, introduction to textual analysis, and improving speaking and listening skills. Students will produce short papers (e.g. book reviews, response papers, reports, and short stories), videos, and/or give presentations in German. Taught in German. Maybe repeated if topic is different. Prerequisite: GER 130  with a minimum grade of C- (or equivalent). Spring semester. Krüger.
