ARH 279 - Global Rock Stars: 17th Century Art in Europe and the Americas (4 Cr.)

This course surveys the painting, sculpture, and architecture of 17th- and 18th- century Europe. We will study masterpieces by artists including Bernini, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer in their social and cultural contexts. Topics for consideration include the development of art theory and art market, the emergence of genres and specialized subject matter, the history of collecting, and the politics of art patronage.
