European and American painting, sculpture, and visual culture in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a period of great social, political and cultural upheaval, with particular emphasis on changing attitudes towards tradition, nature, genius, originality, and innovation in the visual arts and how they relate to an emerging modern spirit.
